FAQs

Can I upload the Voicegift CD to my computer?

Yes, we would encourage you to do this as it is your back up copy.

Are you CRB checked?

Yes. Trish is CRB checked to work with children and vulnerable adults. We will supply all the documentation to support this when you commission your VoiceGift.

Can I order additional copies of the CD?

Yes. These are £15 each if ordered at the time of the original purchase.

If ordered at a later date they are £25 each.

Do you charge VAT?

No. As a small business, we are currently under the VAT threshold and do not charge VAT.

Do you require a deposit?

We require a deposit of £50.00 to cover cancellation and it acts as a booking fee. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you will loose this deposit.

If we arrive on the day and your child is having an off-day and won’t do the recording, we will simply keep this deposit, but no additional charges will be made.

Do you do offer gift vouchers?

Not yet – but we plan to. If you are looking for a gift voucher, please contact us and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

Are there any hidden/additional costs?

No. Our fees for Bristol area include preparation time, the recording, editing, mixing, presentation and postage.

If you live further afield and wish to commission a VoiceGift, there will be additional charges for our travel, time and possibly overnight accommodation. Please contact us for a quote.

How do I prepare my child for a recording?

You know your child best. We recommend that you talk with them beforehand to prepare them. However, some children are just too shy or reticent in which case we recommend that you leave it a year or so before commissioning a VoiceGift.

When we are working with children, we spend a bit of time with them and a parent to build a rapport. Usually this breaks the ice and we pop off to a nearby room to make the recording. In our experience children offer a very different picture if their parents are in the room too.

Of course it might happen that your normally chatty and outgoing child has an off day and won’t do the recording. If this happens we will simply keep your £50 deposit to cover our costs and no additional charge will be made.

How can I reduce the cost of a VoiceGift?

There are several ways that you can reduce the costs of a VoiceGift.

We offer a sliding scale when recording children so it’s well worth joining up with friends for a Voicegift recording day. Please see our fees for more information.

For adults, we offer a £30 reduction in the total fee if you are able to visit our premises in Bristol to make the recording.

How long does it take to make?

Our initial home visit to make the recording takes about 2 hours – depending on the participants and subject matter.

Once we have the recording, we need 10 working days to prepare the final VoiceGift.
We also offer an express service for an additional charge. Please contact us for more details.

What is the choice of music?

The type of music that goes best with the recording is something that is gentle and won’t compete with the words from the recording.

Gentle piano, calm classical and all types of mellow jazz are best suited. We have a diverse selection of music that we are confident will suit all tastes.

How long are the final edited VoiceGifts?

It varies – depending on the person.

For young children (under 12), VoiceGifts are typically 10 -15 minutes. This might not sound very long but it is quality material giving an authentic snapshot of their (often charming) take on life. We ask children to talk about lots of different subjects – we do not dig deep into their psyche although they frequently surprise us with poignant, heart warming material.

Older children tend to have more to say and their VoiceGifts are typically a bit longer. They can be up to 20 minutes long.

Adult VoiceGifts vary depending on the occasion. They start at around 10 minutes but will be longer for legacies or for couples.  Again we are happy to tailor this to meet your needs, please contact us to discuss timings further.

If you commission us to make an additional feature to be played at a wedding or anniversary, it is typically 5 minutes long.

For all VoiceGifts we are aiming for quality. We believe that 5 minutes of quality material is better than 15 minutes cobbled together to make up the time.

We can create longer VoiceGifts by request. For example you might like to have your Father speak at length about his time in the war or the complexities of his family tree. Whatever the scenario, please contact us and we’ll do our best to meet your needs.

Do you make everyone sound great?

The technical quality of the recording will be top notch and we will choose the very best bits of a person’s recording for the final edited VoiceGift.

However, we are recording real people and we want them to sound like real people. This means there will be a few ums and ahs and maybe a little stuttering because that’s how we all speak. Our aim is to capture the authentic essence of the person rather than an airbrushed version.

What if I don't like the finished product?

We will return your money, excluding any additional costs for travel time and expenses.
